A chapter of Maine Audubon
Leaders: Gloria Vollmers and Paul Markson
Essex Woods is a delight for birders and nature photographers, offering a diversity of habitats and species along a short, easy walking trail. Warblers, vireos, Baltimore orioles, and perhaps a black-billed cuckoo may turn up in the shrubs and forest, and a wide variety of ducks and wading birds forage in the marsh. Several species of swallow, common grackles, and eastern kingbirds perch conveniently near their nests when they aren’t flying overhead, while sora and Virginia rails skulk and squabble in the reeds. There’s always something new and interesting to discover here. Directions: Meet at the Watchmaker Drive entrance to Essex Woods, off Essex Street in Bangor.
