SUMMARY: FALL MIGRATION ON SEARS ISLAND - 
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Sandi & Bob Duchesne \nSears Island can be a “mini-Monhegan” during late summer and early autumn. With luck\, we will catch the morning flight of migratory songbirds that have touched down on the island to rest and feed overnight.  They tend to collect in the trees along the causeway before crossing over to the mainland in early morning\, giving birders a close-up view of “confusing fall warblers” and many other migratory species. We’ll then hike down to Penobscot Bay to scan for shorebirds and seabirds\, and see what else pops up in the fields and woods we pass on the way. \nDirections:  Park along the Sears Island causeway\, and meet at the gated entrance to the island. This trip will cancel for rain and/or predicted wind speeds over 20 mph; please call or text Sandi at 207-735-5436 on the evening before the trip\, if in doubt.

SUMMARY: Bumblebee Blitz - 
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to capture\, cold stun\, and identify bumblebee species that live on the Fields Pond Audubon Sanctuary.  Participants will assist Maine Audubon staff in conducting surveys of bumblebees\, the only social native bees in North America.  You’ll receive training on identifying the common (and some uncommon) species of bumblebee in Maine\, and the plants that they use for shelter and foraging. We will also be leading people in capturing bumblebees with butterfly nets\, and cooling them down.  This causes the bees to enter a temporary state of decreased activity\, for easier identification and photography. Join us for a fun day in the field\, with the chance to contribute valuable data to statewide community science projects!

SUMMARY: SEAL ISLAND PUFFIN CRUISE - 
DESCRIPTION:Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge hosts a large colony of Atlantic puffins.  Razorbills\, Common and Arctic Terns\, Great Cormorants\, and Common Eiders also nest here. Other seabirds and raptors are often spotted on or near the island\, and we typically get great views of harbor seals and gray seals with their pups.  Meet at the ferry terminal in Stonington at 12:30 p.m.  The boat leaves promptly at 1:00 p.m.\, and this will give us all enough time to park\, gather our gear\, use the restroom\, and scan the harbor together before departure.  Dress warmly in layers\, and please bring your binoculars and/or camera!   \nNote: Space is limited\, and this trip often fills quite early.  Please make your reservations directly with the Isle Au Haut Boat Company\, 207-367-5193\, and tell them you are with the Penobscot Valley Audubon group.  The trip is unlikely to cancel for bad weather\, since the boat has an enclosed cabin with large viewing windows in addition to plenty of open-air deck space. However\, if the trip is canceled by the Captain for any reason\, you will be notified and receive a full refund. SUMMARY: SUMMER SOLSTICE WILDLIFE RAMBLE - 
DESCRIPTION:This will be a leisurely walk through portions of the Caribou Bog Conservation Area (CBCA)\, an Orono Land Trust property where volunteers are rehabilitating the former Taylor Bait Farm ponds to provide improved habitat for ducks\, shorebirds\, wading birds\, and other species that breed and feed around ponds and freshwater marshes.  The hiking trails between the ponds host a wide variety of resident and migratory bird species\, notably black-billed cuckoo\, warblers\, woodpeckers\, and the occasional raptor. CBCA can be a good spot for mammal sightings as well\, including otters that swim in the ponds and cavort along the banks.  Directions:  from Forest Avenue in Orono\, follow Taylor Road (aka the “Dump Road”) 0.3 miles to a slight left onto Putnam Road. DESCRIPTION:Please join us to elect chapter board members and officers\, followed by a presentation from the 2024 recipient of the Inez Boyd Environmental Research Award (IBERA).  Rachel Darling\, a Ph.D. candidate in Wildlife Ecology at the University of Maine\, will present updated findings from her ongoing research on the migration patterns of American Woodcock.  In addition to enhancing the scientific community’s limited understanding of woodcock migration routes\, altitudes\, and interactions with lighted structures at night\, Rachel’s research findings may help to influence site selection for offshore wind turbines in the Gulf of Maine\, so we can produce clean energy without contributing to further species declines.   \nPotluck dinner starting at 6 p.m.\nAnnual Meeting with featured speaker starting at 7 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:The ethereal sounds of American Woodcock\, Hermit and Wood Thrush\, Common Nighthawk\, and Whip-Poor-Will can be heard after sunset within the Walden Parke Preserve\, a Bangor Land Trust property.  Join us for an evening walk to look and listen for them\, along with other crepuscular species.  Mosquitoes enjoy warm evenings too\, so please come prepared with insect repellent\, a hat\, and appropriate clothing to prevent bites.  Directions:  From Essex Street heading north toward Orono and Pushaw Lake\, turn right onto Walden Parke Way. SUMMARY: BIRDING THE ORRINGTON POWERLINE - 
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a late spring bird walk in the powerline corridor that crosses Fields Pond Road in Orrington.  Shrubby and forest edge habitats provide a unique opportunity to view Prairie Warbler\, Chestnut-sided Warbler\, American Redstart\, and other spring migrants.  Views of Northern Harrier\, American Kestrel\, and other raptors are also possible.  Note: This walk is limited to 15 participants.  We will meet up at the Fields Pond Audubon Center on Fields Pond Road in Holden at 7:00 a.m.\, and car-pool to the nearby powerline. DESCRIPTION:Want to get into birding this spring\, during migration season? Along with our weekly Friday bird walks for all skill levels\, we’re offering a free bird walk for beginners only. If you’re new to birding or have never been on a bird walk before\, this is a great way to get started. You’ll learn to recognize some of the more common species in our region\, alongside other folks who are just as new to birding as you are! \nParticipants should bring binoculars if they have them. We’ll have extras available to loan out\, and we’ll give some quick lessons on how best to use them. The walks are free (donations appreciated!) but please pre-register\, so we can contact you if anything changes due to weather or other safety concerns. \nNote: These walks are intended for true beginner birders. If you already feel comfortable birding on your own and on guided bird walks\, please join us for our weekly Friday morning walks instead. SUMMARY: SPRING MIGRATION ON INLAND WATERS - 
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Bob Milardo*\, Val Watson*\, and Rachel Darling \nJoin us for a spring migration tour to productive birding hotspots in central Maine\, with a focus on species that rest and refuel on Maine’s ponds\, rivers\, and lakes as they open up. We will make multiple stops including Plymouth Pond\, Sebasticook Lake-Durham Bridge\, Sprague’s Mill\, and Corinna Bog/Corundel Lake. We expect to spot a wide variety of waterfowl and wading birds\, shorebirds en route to their sub-Arctic breeding grounds\, and plenty of other resident and migratory species. Bring binoculars or camera\, and a spotting scope if you have one; the guides will also share theirs. \nDirections: Meet at the commuter Park-and-Ride lot east of I-95 at Exit 174 (Carmel-Newburgh)\, directly across from the Dysarts convenience store. PLEASE NOTE: parking along the route is very limited\, so carpooling is a must.

SUMMARY: Woodcock Watch! - 
DESCRIPTION:The display of male American woodcock\, termed the "Sky Dance" by Aldo Leopold\, is one of the first hallmarks of spring when they migrate back to Maine from their wintering grounds in the southeastern US. US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) annual surveys suggest that woodcock populations have declined over the past half-century. Using new GPS tracking technology\, researchers at the University of Maine have led efforts across the eastern U.S. and Canada to learn more about woodcock migration\, including how well the USFWS singing ground surveys correlate with the arrival of woodcock on their breeding grounds.  This program will focus on the knowns and unknowns of woodcock migration\, breeding strategies\, and population declines\, including new findings that the GPS tracking technology has made possible.  Following the presentation\, we’ll go outside to observe displaying male woodcock performing their Sky Dance at twilight over the sanctuary. \nPlease pre-register for all programs at https://maineaudubon.org/events .
